This novel (written by Harper Lee) was published on 11th July 1960 (i.e. exactly 50 years ago). It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1961, and in a Library Journal poll in 1999 it was voted the "best novel of the century". When I read it many years ago, I thought it was dated and over-rated.
Should I read it again, or just wait for her second novel?

It is Must-Stuff in US schools. Written 1960, it might be a bit "outfashioned" for today's young people. The first couple of pages is extended description of countryside. However it interested me so far, as I have been living there. I personally liked it, but will not read it again.

I read the book and I saw the movie based on it several times. The book shows how man can be so hypocritical and cruel, how prejudice had hurt so many, how one brave man can go out of his way to help a fellow man. What makes it a very good book is its being told from the eyes of an innocent child.

The sad part of this book is that, although this book was published fifty years ago, everything in there could still happen today.

I see that Wiki even uses the German word "Bildungsroman" to characterize this novel:

Zitat:
As a Southern Gothic novel and a Bildungsroman, the primary themes of To Kill a Mockingbird involve racial injustice and the destruction of innocence.

Scholars have noted that Lee also addresses issues of class, courage, compassion, and gender roles in the American Deep South. The book is widely taught in schools in English-speaking countries with lessons that emphasize tolerance and decry prejudice. Despite its themes, To Kill a Mockingbird has been subject to campaigns for removal from public classrooms, often challenged for its use of racial epithets. Scholars also note the black characters in the novel are not fully explored, and some black readers receive it ambivalently, although it has an often profound effect for many white readers.
